In a sport traditionally dominated by drivers from Europe and backed by enormous financial support, Nguyễn Owen Tangavelou is pursuing an ambitious dream: becoming one of the first Vietnamese drivers to break into the world’s highest levels of motorsport. Over the past few years, the Vietnamese-French racer has quietly built a reputation as one of the most promising young talents representing Vietnam internationally, while also becoming the first driver to officially represent Vietnam at the prestigious Macau Grand Prix.

Born to a Flemish-Polish mother and a Vietnamese father, Tangavelou grew up in the suburbs of Paris, France. Unlike many professional racers who begin karting at the age of five or six, Owen started relatively late, entering competitive kart racing at just fourteen years old. Despite the disadvantage of starting later than most of his competitors, he progressed rapidly, thanks to his determination and natural speed, moving into single-seater racing only a year later.
His early career included competing in French F4 and Formula Regional championships, where he spent two years developing his racing skills against some of Europe’s top young drivers. In 2024, Tangavelou made his Eurocup-3 debut with MP Motorsport and immediately attracted attention by securing a race victory during his rookie season. The result marked a major milestone in his career and demonstrated his ability to compete at an international level despite limited resources compared to many rivals in the sport.
In 2025, he continued expanding his career overseas by moving to the United States to compete in the USF Pro 2000 Championship with Velocity Racing Development and later DEForce Racing. The move represented another important step toward higher-level motorsport categories such as IndyCar and Formula 1 - championships that Tangavelou openly dreams of reaching one day.
What makes his journey especially inspiring is the difficulty behind it. Unlike many drivers who come from wealthy families or receive large corporate backing early in their careers, Tangavelou has repeatedly spoken about the financial struggles involved in motorsport, one of the world’s most expensive professional sports. Throughout his career, he has faced major obstacles in securing sponsorships and funding while also dealing with serious injuries that threatened to interrupt his progress. Nevertheless, he continued racing with the belief that his success could create opportunities for future Vietnamese drivers.

More than simply competing for personal achievement, Tangavelou has consistently emphasized the importance of representing Vietnam internationally. In interviews, he has spoken proudly about carrying the Vietnamese flag into global racing competitions and wanting Vietnam to be recognized as a competitive motorsport nation on the world stage.
“When competing abroad, in highly competitive and fierce Western championships, I wasn't simply racing for myself. I raced with the burning desire to raise the Vietnamese flag high on the highest podium,” he shared.
As motorsport continues to grow in popularity across Asia, Nguyễn Owen Tangavelou’s journey represents something larger than racing alone. For many young Vietnamese fans, he symbolizes persistence, ambition, and the possibility of seeing Vietnam represented in one of the world’s most elite and demanding sports. Whether his future leads him toward Formula 1, IndyCar, or other international championships, Tangavelou is already helping pave the way for a new generation of Vietnamese motorsport talent.
