DJ Slowz & Thamz With "Jazz Vàng": When Jazz And Rap Tell A Vietnamese Cultural Story

On April 24, DJ Slowz and Thamz released Jazz Vàng — a cross-cultural music project where Jazz and Rap/Hip-Hop become a way to explore Vietnamese identity through a contemporary lens.

"Jazz Vàng" is built around a clever wordplay hidden within its title. In Vietnamese pronunciation, "Jazz Vàng" closely echoes the sound of "Da Vàng" ("yellow skin"), giving the project multiple layers of meaning. Beyond suggesting Jazz as something precious like gold, the title also symbolizes the skin tone often associated with Vietnamese and Asian identity — becoming a reflection of cultural pride, heritage, and belonging.

Coming from different creative backgrounds, both DJ Slowz and Thamz share a common desire to preserve and reinterpret Vietnamese culture through modern sounds. While their artistic approaches may differ, both artists are interested in using music not only as entertainment, but also as a way to document memory, identity, and everyday Vietnamese life.

Slowz is widely recognized as a Vietnamese DJ, producer, and cultural practitioner rooted in Hip-Hop tradition and musical preservation. Through DJing, sampling, live performance, and archival digging, he continuously bridges generations by reconnecting younger audiences with forgotten musical heritage.

Meanwhile, born in Hai Phong, Thamz grew up surrounded by the realities and struggles of everyday life. Those experiences became the raw material for his music, shaping a style heavily influenced by street life, observation, and personal storytelling. He is also known for the album Kiếp Hát Rong.

Through both the song and music video, the two artists aim to celebrate Vietnamese beauty, spirit, and cultural identity within a modern musical context. The track is constructed around a sample from a rare 1970s Vietnamese Soul-Jazz recording, creating a fascinating dialogue between Vietnam's musical heritage and the creative energy of contemporary Rap and Hip-Hop.

More than simply a tribute to local identity, "Jazz Vàng" also carries the ambition of becoming a cultural bridge, introducing Vietnamese culture to international audiences through music and visual storytelling.
